Sleep Apnea

If you stop breathing involuntarily for more than ten seconds this is called an apnea. If this happens while you are asleep it is called Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea can be caused by the collapse of your upper airway (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) or due to a neurological problem (Central Sleep Apnea).

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

When your throat collapses while you are asleep you will stop breathing. The stopping of breathing is called an apnea and will commonly occur hundreds of times per night. From this there are two main outcomes. First is that your heart will come under an enormous strain. Second is that you will suffer from a severely disturbed sleep. The result is that the following day you will be exhausted. The collapsed throat is called obstructive sleep apnea.

CPAP stands for Constant Positive Airway Pressure and is used to describe a bedside device which blows a gentle, constant stream of air into your nose preventing your throat from collapsing. This device is the “gold standard” for treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. You will need your CPAP device to be pre-programmed to blow at a specific pressure throughout the night according to the results obtained from your sleep study and CPAP titration.

The Auto-adjusting Positive Airway Pressure device is smart in that it is able to adjust your air pressure throughout the night as you sleep according to your needs. From this you will have greater comfort. The APAP device is sensitive to changes like body position, a more relaxed airway possibly from alcohol consumption or the taking of a sedative or muscle relaxant. With the APAP device you can be assured of getting the correct pressure support you need when you need it.
